Competition Rules:

»The competition may run up to thirty minutes ahead of schedule and it’s the responsibility of the dancer to be prepared for this.

»Competitors are not allowed to use the foyer of the Cultural Center or stage for practice purposes during any time allotted to the competition. There will be a warm up room provided for practice. Dancers are expected to share the space and be mindful of letting others practice ahead of you if they compete before you. Tap shoes must be covered or removed before and after performance.

»Centre stage will be marked.

»All soloists must compete in the appropriate level and category. Age is determined as of December 31st.

»For duo/trios: use the average age of the dancers to determine the appropriate level.

»Re-dances are allowed only if 50% of the routine wasn’t performed and/or at the discretion of our judges.

»No foreign matter of any kind to be dropped, thrown or used by a dancer on the stage. This is to prevent the stage from becoming slippery.

»At the end of competition, it is the responsibility of dancers to pick up comment/score sheets. Spotlight Dance Competition will not mail out score sheets.

»Judges have final say!

»2 qualified judges per routine, with the average determining the overall score.

»Communication between parents/dance teachers and judges during Spotlight Dance Competition will result in disqualification.

»4-5 award sessions per day.

»Judges will present stand out awards of their choosing to solo/duo/trios of the session. Top three marks of each level and category will be announced and dancers will be recognized and awarded. Overall cash prizes will be awarded at Solo Showdown.

»All participants in the competition are eligible for awards.

»To qualify for Solo Showdown, dancers MUST meet eligibility guidelines (see below).

»TOP 6 Mini, Junior, Teen & Senior soloists will compete once again at the Solo Showdown with their qualifying solo. Judges will use the same scoring system that is used during regular competition. Cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded at Solo Showdown.

>> NEW FOR 2023** For
dancers who make the top 6 Mini, Junior, Teen, Senior, an average score will be calculated from your entries from the regular competition and then the Solo Showdown score will be added together to determine the Overall Solo Showdown winners.

For example: Teens need 3 solos to qualify- We will take the top 3 marks and find the average from the regular competition ie; DANCER A: Jazz Solo 87, Lyrical Solo 85, Tap Solo 90 = 262/3 = 87.33 (this is the regular
competition average for Dancer A. Then Dancer A competes in the Solo Showdown with Tap Solo (highest mark from regular competition) and receives a 94 at Solo Showdown. Then we take 94 + 87.33 = 181.33/2= 90.66- THEN 90.66 will be the Overall Solo Showdown Score for Dancer A. Implementing this system honours the performances that the dancers gave during the regular competition and encourages dancers to be well rounded in multiple disciplines.

»Top 2 duo/trios per level from the competition will be invited to perform (not compete) at Solo Showdown with the overall cash prizes for duo/trio awarded at the end of the show.

Mini- ages 5-8
Junior- ages 9-11
Teen - ages 12-14

Max of 5 solos per dancer, no max for duos/trios.

Scoring system:
50% technique
20% performance
20% originality
